This just in from the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).

We have requested the permit application and an informational meeting to discuss the application and permitting process that would allow discharges totaling up to 900,000 gallons per day from Hampstead WWTP into Piney Run, a tributary of Loch Raven Reservoir, and an unnamed tributary of Deep Run that flows into the North Branch of the Patapsco River. We feel it would be helpful if Riverkeeper supporters also sent a request in using the included contact information below.

Application for State Discharge Permit 22DP0594, NPDES Permit MD0022446:

Carroll County Bureau of Utilities, 225 North Center Street, Room 218, Westminster MD 21157 applied for renewal of the permit to discharge treated municipal wastewater from the Hampstead Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), located at 4455 North Woods Trail, Hampstead, Carroll County MD 21074 to Piney Run, a tributary of Loch Raven Reservoir, and an unnamed tributary of Deep Run. The total combined wastewater discharge from Hampstead WWTP will not exceed the WWTP design capacity of 900,000 gpd.

If a written request is received by July 6, 2022, an informational meeting can be held to discuss the application and permitting process. Requests should be forwarded to the Maryland Department of Environment, Water and Science Administration, 1800 Washington Blvd., Baltimore, Maryland 21230-1708, Attn: Mr. Yen-Der Cheng, Chief, Municipal Permits Division.
