Days Cove Discharge Permit in the News

It has been an exciting few weeks for those following along with the process of Days Cove Rubble Landfill’s reapplication for their wastewater discharge permit. Pre and post-hearing coverage was provided by the Baltimore Banner. Here Theaux Le Gardeur of Gunpowder RIVERKEEPER did an interview with the banner and is on record saying, “My sense is, well, that’s just not fair,” in regard to Days Cove’s track record in not being able to meet its current permit obligation.

The Baltimore Sun also had representatives at the hearing to cover the public input session. WMAR quoted Theaux Le Gardeur as saying, “I thought last night’s meeting was democracy in action,” in their article covering the hearing in addition their multiple videos of coverage on youtube.

The Bay Journal’s coverage on September 26th referenced a joint statement from Republican delegates: “Approving this application will admit more pollutants to an already struggling ecosystem and undermine efforts to improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay, a concern that we cannot afford to overlook.”

Capital News Service’s October 1 release by Alexandra Marek quoted Theaux LeGardeur noting the presence of endangered species “It is important for people to understand that if endangered species are within the basin it would be reasonable to assume that the public notice would indicate that,” said Gardeur. “That should indicate stricter permit conditions, rather than looser permit restrictions.”
