Summary
Gunpowder RIVERKEEPER® operates out of the Sparks Nature Center, a space uniquely situated along the TCB (Torrey C. Brown) Trail and beside the Big Gunpowder River. Housed in a historic bank building, the center serves as both our organizational headquarters and a hub for environmental outreach, community engagement, and scientific monitoring.
Since moving into the space in 2023, we’ve worked to reconnect the building with its original purpose of serving the community. Today, it supports our mission to protect and restore the Gunpowder, Bird, Bush, and Middle River watersheds through hands-on learning, data collection, and public-facing programs.

History
Built in 1916, the Sparks State Bank originally served the rural community of Sparks and travelers on the Northern Central Railroad. It stood beside the town’s post office and general store, forming a small commercial hub along the tracks.
After closing in 1954 due to declining train use and frequent flooding from the Gunpowder River, the building was repurposed in the 1990s as a children’s nature center, a role it served until further flood damage form hurricane Sandy in 2012 forced its closure. You can see white panels along the wall which mark the height of the water damage within the building.
Past Events
At the Sparks Bank Nature Center, learning happens through hands-on experiences, creative workshops, and time spent outdoors. Our educational events are designed to connect community members of all ages with the Gunpowder River through art, exploration, and environmental action. Whether you’re making a terrarium, cleaning a stream, or transforming trash into art, there’s always something meaningful happening here.
