Maryland boasts a diverse array of bird species, thanks to its varied habitats, including wetlands, forests, and coastal areas. Notable birds in Maryland include the state bird, the Baltimore Oriole, as well as the American Black Duck, the Red-tailed Hawk, and various migratory species that pass through during the spring and fall. Birdwatching in Maryland can be particularly rewarding, with opportunities to spot both common and rare species throughout the year.
Merlin is a user-friendly birding app developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, designed to help both novice and experienced birdwatchers identify birds easily and effectively. The app features a powerful identification tool that uses a simple questionnaire about the bird’s size, color, and location to provide a list of possible species. Additionally, it offers a wide range of bird sounds, photos, and relevant information to enhance the birdwatching experience.
Using Merlin, we created a file on the local birds we have found using the app throughout May.
