Join Gunpowder Riverkeeper for Training with Smithsonian Environmental Research Center!

Gunpowder Riverkeeper is honored to take part in a monitoring program with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC).

Every day, several NASA satellites circle the globe from the North to the South Pole. As the earth turns, these satellite routes will cross over the entire planet, one swath at a time. Some of these satellites take pictures of the ever-changing waters of the earth.

This program is designed to ground truth the satellite data by comparing information from samples obtained in the field to the satellite data to determine how precisely the space images capture water quality data.

To learn more about Gunpowder Riverkeeper’s involvement with this program, read our introduction of SERC’s efforts. Additionally, read more about our members that have already attended past training.

Please join us in this incredibly important and exciting journey! We will be hosting a training with SERC for volunteers on July 30th. These sampling efforts will require access to a boat–which will allow volunteers to obtain data 100 yds from the shoreline– so please only attend this training if you are a motorized boat owner or have a boat readily available within the Bush, Gunpowder, Bird or Middle River areas.

The training will take place at the Oasis Marina at Gunpowder Cove (510 Riviera Dr, Joppatowne, MD 21085). Here is the link to directions. Please RSVP by July 27th by emailing gunpowderriverkeeper@gmail.com
