Thanks to Tim Wheeler at the Bay Journal for his February 5th article “Anglers, riverkeeper keep pressure on Maryland landfill.”
The article covers this history of the landfill from it’s acquisition by the State Park in the 1980’s through its discharge violations once it began effluent discharge into the Gunpowder watershed and to the public reaction to its 2025 discharge permit application.
Wheeler references Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) spokesperson Jay Apperson when he says, “Apperson said in December that when MDE issues the landfill a new permit, it will include additional monitoring and evaluation requirements. In late January, he said MDE was still reviewing public comments on the permit and expects to make a final determination by May 1.”
Wheeler quotes Gunpowder RIVERKEEPER® Theaux Le Gardeur, who captured the public sentiment saying,
“I don’t think [state officials] have a full understanding that we want this thing closed as quickly and safely as possible.”
