Sparks Bank Nature Center Receives New Residents: Killifish!

Exciting news for everyone who has stopped by the Sparks Bank Nature Center in the last few months to look at our 180 gallon aquarium full of nothing: There are fish in there now!

SPNC’s 180 Gallon Tank: Now Featuring Killifish

There are over 1,200 species of killifish around the world, some coming in vibrant colors. Our Banded Killifish (Fundulus diaphanus) are native to the Atlantic and the Chesapeake Bay, where they are eaten by just about everything from largemouth bass to pike, trout, herons, and kingfishers.

While the Banded Killifish are not the most vibrant variety, they do exhibit camouflaging behavior as their bodies change color to match their surroundings. They also school, or shoal, together which makes for an interesting show.

Whether you’re hiking or biking on the Torrey C. Brown Trail or just happen to be passing by, come in and say hello to our new friends at 1207 Sparks Road.
