Thanks to Sapna Bansil at the Baltimore Banner and Natalie Jones at the Baltimore Sun for their articles covering the latest news on the Days Cove Rubble Landfill Lease. The Maryland Board of Public Works (BPW) met on January 7th, 2026 in part to discuss the future of the landfill, which had been operating without a lease since the matter had been withdrawn from the December 17th BPW meeting due to the influx of public comments.
Bansil’s article details that “Maryland’s spending board approved a short-term lease extension Wednesday for a controversial eastern Baltimore County landfill, a step state officials said gives them additional time to plan for the facility’s closure.”
She quotes Deputy DNR secretary David Goshorn, who told the board,
“The most important point I want to make is that it is DNR’s priority and commitment to finally close and cap this landfill and transfer its use to public accessible use at our beautiful Gunpowder Falls State Park. That takes a little bit of time.”
Jones’ article also quotes the deputy secretary when he said,
“I obviously can’t guarantee a 100% agreement on every 100% of the issues, but at the very least, when we come back to you in the spring, we’ll have a plan that is informed by these conversations where everyone understands where everyone’s coming from.”
